Teresa Camou-Guerrero, SUNÚ
FILM 043
In Front of Us Film Series and Agave Festival Marfa present Sunú, an extraordinary film by Teresa Camou Guerrero. Camou made the film, which is named after the Rarámuri word for corn, in close collaboration with several members of Rarámuri agricultural communities in the state of Chihuahua, with additional insight provided by farmers and State agricultural agencies in the north of Mexico. The film raises many questions about the role of industrial technology and method in the formation of society, with an emphasis on the struggles of rural agriculturalists to maintain their social cohesion as well as their religious and social rites.
Born and raised in México, Camou first considers herself to be a puppeteer. She has a B. A in Visual Arts and Social Science at Bennington College, US. Teresa is founder and director of “El Teatro Indígena de la Sierra Tarahumara”, which has become a native Mexican puppet theatre company based in northern Mexico's Sierra Madre, known as the Sierra Tarahumara.
SUNU is her first feature film, she has also produced and directed two short animation films: TEWE CHIVA NESERO (2007) and EL ENTIERRO (2008). Her latest work is the documentary film CRUZ (2021), selected at Morelia FF 2021.
